Art Candy - Jacques-Louis David

This week, and I'm way overdue, we're going to take a look at the work of Jacques-Louis David, 1748 - 1825, a French Neoclassical painter.

Neoclassical was a rebirth of the styles of classic antiquity in the more modern context, notably classic Roman styles. However, in neoclassical painting, the connection to the classics is more in the subject matter than it is the style itself.

Jacques-Louis David is a significant figure in the Neoclassical painting movement and a notable figure of the French Revolution and the rise of Napoleon.

One of his more notable works, the Oath of the Horatii, exemplifies the Neoclassical painting concepts.

However, as a member of the French Revolution and later a supporter of Napoleon, his subjects weren't always classical.
